Our Herbalist...
     Maia Toll opened The Apothecary Garden in 2006 to provide Philadelphia and the surrounding communities with access to informed holistic herbal care. Maia's original herbal training took place in Ireland where she was apprenticed to herbalist Gina McGarry. As an apprentice, Maia learned every step in the process of herbal medicine making from growing and gathering, to tincturing, to client care. Her Irish clients included humans of all ages as well as the cows and chickens on a neighboring organic farm.

      Since returning to the States, Maia has continued to study. She has been certified as a holistic health counselor through The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and The American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Maia also attended advanced herbal training at Sage Mountain in Vermont. At this wonderful school, founded by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar, Maia studied with a number of this country's top names in herbal medicine. Currently, Maia continues her studies under herbalist David Winston.
 

     Back in the days when Maia was beginning to dabble in herbs, she was working full time as a teacher. She still loves teaching and offers classes on an ongoing basis. She has taught herbal workshops at The University of Pennsylvania, Pennypack Farms, and The Springside School.
